| Description |
Life zones and habitat: Montane to subalpine (8000 to 12000 ft.); shady woodlands, streamsides, wetlands. Plant: Erect perennial 4 to 16 inches tall, usually leafless stem. Easily overlooked plant. Leaves: Ovate-cordate basal leaves 1 to 2-3/4 inches long with doubly-crenate edges and long petioles; usually no stem leaves or just one or two. Inflorescence: Several very small green flowers less than 1/4-inch across along and around the stem, each with 5 sepals, 5 stamens and deeply-cut feather-like petals bending backward. Bloom Period: June to August. Fruit: Fruit cup about 1/4-inch across contains small, shiny green seeds turning dark brown.
