Description |
Life zones and habitat: Foothills to subalpine (5500 to 11000 ft); sandy, gravelly soils in open meadows. Plant: Erect, stout unbranched perennial 20 to 26 inches tall with pubescent-hairy stems. Leaves: Basal and 6 to 8 pairs of opposite stem leaves ovate with undulate or finely curled (crisped) margins and 3/4 to 3-1/8 inches long and clasping; blades smooth or hairy. Inflorescence: Flowers in 8 to 12 crowded clusters along stem, tending to be on one side; each 5-lobed corolla 1 to 1.9 inches long, blue to lavender and hairless externally; lower lobes smooth or somewhat hairy internally; staminode (unfertile stamen in center of blossom) tip hairy, with an obvious slight notch; anthers usually hairy.
