Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains (4000 to 5500 ft.); sandy soils. Plant: Erect annual 4 to 20 inches tall with single stem branching above, with short stiff hairs. Leaves: Alternate stem leaves withlinear-lanceolate blades 1.2 to 2.4 inches long and up to 1/4-inch wide; on short petioles 1/4-inch long; with 1 to 3 veins, long-tapered base, entire edges and acute tips. Inflorescence: Several composite flower heads in open arrays at stem tips; each flower with up to 30 disk florets and no rays; each floret with a deeply 5-lobed corolla, pink to rose-red, each lobe less than 3/8-inch long; 5 stamens with dark purple anthers fused together around style; involucre is cylindrical to funnel-shaped with phyllaries in 2 to 3 layers with short, glandular hairs.
