Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains (3400 to 5200 ft.); dry, sandy or gravelly soils in prairies, disturbed sites, and roadsides. Plant: Bushy perennial 1 to 4 ft. tall with stems that are erect to decumbent, branching and smooth. Leaves: Alternate, linear to linear-lanceolate, 2 to 6 inches long, less than 1/3 inch wide; on short petioles less than 1/4-inch long; margins are entire; surfaces are smooth; tips tapering to points. Inflorescence: Clusters arising from leaf axils of 1 to 3 large bright pink to purplish red funnel-shaped flowers with darker centers, 2 to 3-1/2 inches long; 5 stamens; 5-lobed calyx with unequal-length sepals. Bloom Period: June to August.
