Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains and foothills (5000 to 8500 ft.); dry, sandy or rocky soils in desert to semi- desert areas. Plant: Low-moderate height shrub 8 to 20 inches tall; stems with light gray bark, becoming flaky with age; newer growth is upright, smooth, green becoming tan. Leaves: Very narrow, linear blades 3/8 to 1-5/8 inches long and up to 2 mm wide; usually flat with a faint midrib; tips are acute to apiculate; margins are smooth or hirtellous (pubescent with minute and somewhat rigid hairs); surfaces are smooth. Inflorescence: Dense cyme-like arrays about 1-5/8-inches wide with upper leaves reaching into but not overtopping the arrays; flowers with no rays, each with 4 or 5 yellow disk florets with spreading corolla lobes and protruding style; involucres are cylindric to turbinate 5 to 8 mm tall with phyllaries with keels in 3 or 4 layers.
