Description Life zones and habitat: Plains to foothills (3700 to 6500 ft.); dry, sandy, rocky, calcareous soils; grasslands, along creeks, canyons and open woodlands.
Plant: Erect perennial, 24 to 60 inches tall; single stem, or sparsely branched above and smooth or slightly hairy; milky sap.
Leaves: Very narrow, drooping, long, linear blades, 2 to 10 inches long and 0.04 to 0.3-inch wide, mostly smooth on both surfaces.
Inflorescence: Umbels in the upper portion of the stem, about 2 inches wide; individual flowers are about 3/8-inch wide and have 5 pale greenish-white pointed petals with purplish tips; the corona has 5 broad white, curved hoods closely upright next to the central column.
Bloom Period: June to August.
