Description Life zones and habitat: Montane to subalpine; meadows, roadsides, openings and woodlands.
Plant: Erect, stout perennial up to 32 inches tall, lower portions of multiple stems are green and reddish above.
Leaves: Basal leaves are large, oblanceolate or spatulate with stalks; stem leaves much smaller, lanceolate and clasping; both with smooth edges.
Inflorescence: Large flower heads over 2 inches across with many (30 to 90) narrow orange/yellow rays around the yellow center of 100+ disk florets; and thick green phyllaries beneath.
