Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills to subalpine. Open areas, sagebrush slopes; widepread in the Rocky Mountains.
Plant: Low shrub, much-branched at base, about 2 feet tall; minute hairs make stems appear grayish-green.
Leaves: Upright, narrow linear leaves up to 3 inches long, leathery and fuzzy.
Inflorescence: Narrow composite flower heads, 1/2-inch long in clusters, no ray flowers (petals), several (8 to 20) disk florets from leafy, slender bracts.
