Description Life zones and habitat: Alpine. Tundra, rocky areas, talus.
Plant: Erect, perennial about 4 inches tall with multiple purple stems forming a mound.
Leaves: Only basal leaves, up to 2-1/2 inches long, fernlike, deeply pinnately-dissected.
Inflorescence: Compound flower head, usually just one per stem; no ray flowers but many disk florets with white/pinkish petals and protuding stamen sheath.
