Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills and montane. Woodlands, shrublands; widely distributed in the western US.
Plant: Large bushy shrub 2 to several feet tall; dark grey or reddish stems.
Leaves: Alternately-attached dark green leaves, elliptically-shaped, up to 2 inches long with toothed edges above the middle.
Inflorescence: Prolific, showy flowers in clusters with 5 white petals and many stamens.
Fruit: Sweet, dark purple berry.
