Description |
Life zones and habitat: Montane to alpine (9200 to 13000 ft.); rocky hillsides, woodland openings and meadows.
Plant: Short perennial 8 to 12 inches tall, light green to reddish stems sparsely or densely covered with woolly hairs . Leaves: Basal leaves narrowly lanceolate to oblanceolate, 2 to 5-1/2 inches long, fleshy, hairless, with entire, slightly undulate, sometimes denticulate, sparsely ciliate edges; stem leaves sessile, lanceolate to ovate, auriculate, 1-1/2 to 3 inches long, bases clasping, surfaces sparsely hairy and edges hairy. Inflorescence: Solitary, composite flower heads 1 to 1-3/4 inches across with 20 to 55 yellow rays around the yellow center of 100+ disk florets; phyllaries are shaggy-hairy, narrowly obovate of different lengths, in several rows, colored green to purple. Bloom Period: July and August. Description |
Life zones and habitat: Montane to subalpine (7000 to 11800 ft.); meadows, roadsides, openings and woodlands.
Plant: Erect, stout perennial up to 32 inches tall, lower portions of multiple stems are green and reddish above. Leaves: Basal leaves are large, oblanceolate or spatulate to narrowly elliptic with stalks; stem leaves much smaller, lanceolate and clasping; both with smooth surfaces and edges. Inflorescence: Usually solitary, large flower heads over 2 inches across with many (30 to 90) narrow orange/yellow rays around the yellow center of 100+ disk florets; thick green oblong to spatulate phyllaries beneath.
