Description Life zones and habitat: Plains to subalpine (4800 to 12000 ft). Dry, rocky areas, open areas in forests.
Plant: Erect perennial 10 to 28 inches tall.
Leaves: Alternate, triangular to subhastate leaves, 1-1/4 to 2-3/4 inches long; crenate-dentate margins.
Inflorescence: Clusters of drooping rayless flower heads on long stalks arising from upper leaf axils, each with many (20 to 40 or more) creamy-white disk florets; green involucre 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.
Bloom Period: July to September.
