Description |
Life zones and habitat: Montane to Alpine (8000 to 14000 ft.); mountain meadows, streambanks and open understory. Plant: Perennial grass, strongly tufted; culms 8 to 24 inches long often decumbent and rooting at the nodes. Foliage: Sheaths smooth; stem blades flat, 3/4 to 4-3/4 inches long and 1/8 to 1/4-inch wide with rough margins and inflated and separating from the culm; ligules blunt, nearly entire, 1/8-inch long or less. Inflorescence: Dense panicle, nearly globe-shaped to short-cylindrical, 3/8 to 1-3/4 inches long, with an overall purplish cast, made up of closely packed spikelets; purplish glumes terminating in horn-like awns; anthers lavender. Life zones and habitat: Plains to Subalpine (3800 to 11000 ft.); meadows, grasslands, roadsides and disturbed areas. Plant: Perennial grass, tufted; culms 16 to 40 inches tall. Foliage: Sheaths smooth; stem blades flat, 2 to 8 inches long and 3/16 to 1/3-inch wide with rough margins and not inflated; ligules blunt, nearly entire but sometimes irregular-jagged edges, 3/16-inch long or less. Inflorescence: Slender, dense panicle, cylindrical, 2 to 6 inches long, made up of closely packed spikelets; green glumes terminating in horn-like awns; anthers pale lavender.
