Description Life zones and habitat: Montane to alpine. Wet areas along stream banks, alpine meadows and slopes.
Plant: Upright tufted perennial up to 16 inches tall; grass-like.
Leaves: Basal sheaths around stem a few centimeters long.
Inflorescence: Borne on the side of the stem toward the top; long, cylindrical bract at the base extending beyond flowers; flower is on a thin pedicel with thick dark brown tepals, sometimes with green striping.
