Description |
Life zones and habitat: Subalpine and alpine. Exposed areas, rocky areas, tundra. Plant: Upright perennial to 6 inches tall in loose tufts with old leaves. Leaves: Three to four flat, linear basal leaves 1/8-inch wide. Inflorescence: Dense cluster of 6 to 12 spikes 1/2-inch long; dark brown-black scales; pistillate (female) flowers above. Description |
Life zones and habitat: Montane to alpine. Streambanks, wet to moist meadows. Plant: Upright, clumped, perennial 4 to 26 inches tall. Triangular stems with rough edges, taller than leaves. Leaves: Flat, linear basal leaves 1/8 to 1/4-inch wide. Inflorescence: Three or four spikes of many flowers; upper spike has staminate (male) flowers; pistillate (female) flowers below; brown-purple scales; bract below lowermost spike.
